To find out about intercity transportation to and from the capital city, as well as about routes to the whole country and Central America, there is one place to go: the Great Transportation Terminal in Albrook. The telephone number is 232-5803, and if you want to send a fax, dial 314-6170.
Buses
The Cooperativa de Trabajo Servicios de Autobuses del Corregimiento de Ancón (Coop. SACA) will take you into and out of Clayton. It leaves from Calidonia, on one side of the Legislative Palace. The service is very practical and frequent in the morning, but a little less so in the afternoon. It covers routes to Marcos Gelabert airport, the university of the Americas (UDELAS), Gamboa and Paraíso. It takes the main streets of Clayton all the way to the United States Embassy. Fare up to Clayton: $ 0.35.
In the capital city, you can choose to take buses that travel off the main roads and go almost anywhere. The system will seem a bit complicated at first: the routes of the so-called diablos rojos (red devils) are only indicated by the names of their destinations written above their windshields and by the key places that the driver's assistant (see pavo in the list of Panamanian expressions) announces from stop to stop. Ideally, a Panamanian should go with you on your first bus trips. In time, riding a "diablo rojo" will be an every day occurrence for you. Minimum fare in Panama city: $ 0.25.
Intercity buses to the provinces are in excellent condition and have air conditioning. Check the fares to the various destinations at Albrook Terminal.
There, you can also find out about intercity bus rental for special trips.
Taxis
There are two taxi services from Clayton: Taxi Clayton (telephone 317-0386) and América Libre (telephone 223-7342).
Taxi service in Panama city is quite regular, but it may get scarce on a rainy afternoon. You can take taxis in the street or call one from your residence. When taking a taxi, see if it has its identification number on its sides and, for your own good, choose taxis without co-pilots. Don't be alarmed if you see other passengers in it who are going somewhere else -taxi drivers try to make the most of their gasoline.
As for fares, you should know that Panama city operates under a zone system. The final price will depend on the zones that your route has taken you across. That is why you should demand that the zone map be visibly placed in the taxi. Each zone is usually delineated with different color markers. The minimum rate for Panama city is $1.25 and an extra $0.25 for each additional passenger.
If you would like a city tour, the best you can do is hire the services of a taxi on an hourly basis (8 to 15 dollars an hour).
If you take someone along, the price will be ideal.
For further information on services and fares to and from the airport, you can check with the Sindicato Industrial de Conductores de Taxis de Panamá (Panama Taxi Driver Union), located at the international airport (telephone 238-4176).
