South Knowledge: A space for regional exchange of experiences of South-South Cooperation
The Government of Panama, with support of the UN system, coordinated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will organize from May 8 to 10, 2012, at the City of Knowledge (Panama), the Regional Cooperation Fair South Knowledge: Regional Exchange Solutions. This is a space in which the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean will share knowledge on social development policies and the mechanisms used in the South-South Cooperation (SSC).
"In addition to visualize, share and learn from experiences and successful solutions for South-South Cooperation in the countries of the region, the Fair aims to facilitate new agreements between countries that contribute to sustainable development, which gives it a political dimension," said Maximino Rodríguez, General Manager in charge of Special Projects and International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Panama.
To do this, South Knowledge has been structured around three pillars. First, there will be a series of roundtables for topic exchange, covering the four focus areas of the Fair: Social programs and social protection systems; Fiscal policies to promote equity and social investment; Citizen participation, inclusion and public policy; and Environment and disaster risk reduction. Exchange tables will also be organized to discuss the political, technical and technological mechanisms that accelerate the implementation of SSC processes.
"Representatives from twenty countries of Latin America and the Caribbean will present and exchange information on a total of 33 successful experiences of SSC. There will be thirteen initiatives of social programs per subject area, ten of citizen participation, four of fiscal politics and six environmental," explains Freddy Justiniano, Director of the Regional Centre for Latin America and the Caribbean of the UNDP.
On the other hand, there will be satellite events where experts from different sectors will discuss issues such as the challenges faced by the academia in the systematization of SSC experiences, information management systems and priorities on the agenda of SSC. The third pillar is the physical display of selected experiences, which will have a sample area at the grounds of the Fair.
South Knowledge will be held at the City of Knowledge, a renowned campus that brings together institutions and bilateral, multilateral, nongovernmental organizations, that has the infrastructure and services required for an event of this nature. "Our Convention Center, where the Fair will be held, offers a unique environment for sharing experiences and knowledge in optimal conditions. We hope to provide the perfect setting for a rich discussion," said Jorge Arosemena, Executive Director of the City of Knowledge Foundation.
It is hoped that governments, multilateral agencies, regional and sub regional integration mechanisms, civil society organizations and academia participate in this Fair, which will close with a final declaration that will define the acquire commitments and the future of cooperation in the region.
