Campaign against women discrimination in Panama
The Central American Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Information Center in Panama (CINUP) launched, on February 1st, a national campaign against women discrimination.
This campaign is part of a global initiative that seeks to raise awareness and make people reflect on ways of intentional discrimination and those directed at women in Panamanian society.
Billboards located in various parts of the city and the interior of Panama show diverse groups of women and invite people to reflect on their perceptions regarding those images.
The campaign will last approximately 2 months.
"Discrimination against women represents an obstacle to the full enjoyment of their human rights and to some extent we are all accomplices," said Carmen Rosa Villa, OHCHR Regional Representative. "Ending discrimination against women is everyone's job. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights in its 1st article proclaims that All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood."
Meanwhile Jiesselinde Gonzalez, CINUP Information Officer, noted: "Women are discriminated for racial and economic reasons. There are marked differences in the work and political field, and it is the task of everyone to end all discriminatory practices that are embedded in our culture."
